What the Critics Say
As If to Lay to Rest combines the best attributes of emo rock and roots rock with angst ridden songs rendered with the immediacy of a live recording. McFarland's gruff road-weary voice conveys the introspective and confessional nature of his lyrics with conviction as he often pauses in mid-phrase to reflect on the dilemma at hand. "Twang'" is the most alluring track on this collection, skillfully employing a familiar major chord progression and up-tempo gallop to uphold the decidedly romantic storyline. The other stand-out cuts such as "Begin With Measurement," "Drive," and "One Good Thing" contain subtle hooks which make As If to Lay to Rest a strong album that will appeal fans of classic rock and adult alternative. ~ Tom Semioli, All Music Guide
