What the Critics Say
Ja, Ich Bin die Tolle Frau compiles German language versions of many of the best-known recordings by husky-voiced Belgian pop singer and actress Angéle Durand. Multilingualism and multiculturalism abound as Durand sings famous tunes such as "Chanson d'Amour" and "Melodie d'Amour" in mixed French and German, warbles the Latin-flavored "Chihuahua" in German, and explores the American West with the Nilsen Brothers on "Die Cowboys von der Silver-Ranch." Durand also covers a number of American hits for the German audience, including Betty Johnson's "Hoopa Hoola," Patti Page's "Go on with the Wedding," and a version of "Apple Blossom Time" set to an exotic rock & roll rhythm. "So Ist Paris" was one of Durand's biggest hits and only one of many songs about that city featured in her repertoire, which also includes "Casino de Paris" and "Merci Paris." All of the recordings on Ja, Ich Bin die Tolle Frau were originally released on the German Electrola label between 1954 and 1961. Bear Family has also released a companion disc, Lieder der Claire Waldoff, that contains Durand's tribute to Claire Waldoff, the famous lesbian cabaret performer of Berlin. ~ Greg Adams, Rovi
