What the Critics Say

Os Paralamas do Sucesso were one of the first and better succeeded bands of the so-called "new Brazilian rock", style which appeared in the late 70's. In fact, "Brazilian" in this style are only the lyrics, and, in several cases, not even the lyrics. The failure in elaborating Brazilian tradition within the boundaries of rock may have deleterious effects: why should American or Japanese listeners be interested in the "new Brazilian rock" if they can get the real thing (American rock), much better played? This live record is the most Brazilian-focused album by the Paralamas. It is evident that they finally tried a synthesis with the music of their country. The timid enterprise is restricted to "A novidade," "O rio Severino," "Um a um," "Não me estrague o dia/Sol e chuva." In all these tracks they flirt with baião, and they even abandon it in the middle of a couple of them - but they are a clear evidence of how much better would be the Paralamas' (and all "Brazilian rock"') sound if they had more interest in the rich Brazilian tradition. They also cover their big hits "Vamo batê lata," "Lanterna dos afogados" and "Romance ideal," A bonus Cd brings "Uma brasileira," "Saber amar," "Luís Inácio"and "Esta tarde." ~ Alvaro Neder, All Music Guide
