What the Critics Say
Leonard Feather organized this tribute to the bebop era, utilizing altoist Phil Woods (the date's real leader), either Idrees Sulieman or Thad Jones on trumpet, pianist George Wallington, bassist Curley Russell and either Denzil Best or Art Taylor on drums. Although allegedly a salute to 52nd Street, the music ignores the diversity of the Street and sticks exclusively to bebop standards, including "Lemon Drop," "Anthropology," "Shaw 'Nuff" and "Billie's Bounce." The biggest surprise is that Baird Parker (the five-year old son of the late Charlie Parker) takes the "vocal" on "Salt Peanuts." Otherwise, the music (reissued on CD by V.S.O.P.) is uneventful, although swinging. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
