Besides being the first official release on Planet E, 4 Jazz Funk Classics set the precedent for the sound that would become synonymous with Carl Craig's label. Albums such as Craig's masterpiece, More Songs About Food and Revolutionary Art, may make you think otherwise with its serious tone, but Planet E has always been about keeping things funky, no matter how daring they may get. As 69, Craig gets about as funky as he's ever been in his career. Craig heads for his sampler (brilliantly snatches some Curtis Mayfield) and assembles some wonderful-sounding breakbeats with plenty of shape distortion and fuzzy warmth that sounds just as fresh today as it did then. ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide
